Lesson 1 of 4 · 6 min

The first 24 hours after a freeze

The first day after a freeze decides how the whole case goes, and almost every instinct people act on in that first day makes things worse. This lesson is a short list of what to do and a shorter list of what not to do.

What to record, now

Before anything changes or scrolls out of view, capture the state of things:

  • The exact message. Screenshot and save the full text of the freeze or hold notice, with the date and time. The precise wording tells an expert whether this is a compliance review, a suspected takeover, or a legal hold, and those go very differently.
  • Any reference or case number the exchange gave you. You will quote it in every future message.
  • The affected addresses and amounts. Note the deposit address, the withdrawal you attempted, and the balances involved. Screen them so you know your own exposure before compliance tells you theirs.
  • The deadline, if one is stated. Some platforms give a fixed window to respond. Miss it and options close.

What not to do

These are the mistakes that quietly destroy cases in the first 24 hours:

  • Do not spam support tickets. Opening ten tickets does not speed anything up. It resets your place in the queue, contradicts itself, and makes you look erratic. One clear ticket, then wait for the real reviewer.
  • Do not move or try to move funds around. Attempting withdrawals to new addresses, or shuffling other balances, reads as exactly the behavior a freeze is meant to catch.
  • Do not lie or guess. If you do not know where a deposit came from yet, say you will document it, do not invent a source. A single contradiction with the on-chain record ends your credibility for the whole case.
  • Do not structure or split. If any part of the account is still movable, resist the urge to break it into small pieces. That is a fresh red flag on top of the freeze.

Then stop and prepare

Once you have recorded everything and sent one calm acknowledgment, the urgent phase is over. The case is now won on preparation: your Source of Funds, your communication, and, if needed, escalation, each covered next. If the amount is significant, get a free assessment before you send your first substantive reply.

Free preliminary case assessment

Describe your situation and we will give you an honest assessment: what is realistically possible, how long it takes and what it costs. No "guaranteed unlocks": they do not exist, because the decision sits with compliance.
