Crypto blocked in London: UK banks and exchanges

UK crypto users are caught between two systems: a full regulatory regime that does not begin until 25 October 2027, and high-street banks that already limit or refuse crypto payments. If money is stuck today, the useful question is which of the two has stopped it, because the fix is different.

Local specifics

The FCA regime is not live yet

The FCA's authorisation gateway opened on 30 September 2026 and closes on 28 February 2027, with the regime itself starting on 25 October 2027. Until then its oversight is limited mainly to financial promotions and anti-money-laundering controls. Do not assume the protections you expect from a bank apply to your exchange account.

Your bank may be the blocker

An industry survey published in January 2026 reported that UK banks block or delay about 40% of payments to crypto platforms. Reported limits vary widely: Barclays and HSBC are described as capping transfers at £2,500 per payment and £10,000 over 30 days, and some banks refuse outright. Check your own bank's current terms.

Reporting fraud has a new address

Report Fraud replaced Action Fraud in December 2025. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland you report at reportfraud.police.uk or on 0300 123 2040, and in Scotland through Police Scotland on 101. Keep your reference number, since exchanges and lawyers will ask for it.

Coming back into sterling

When crypto proceeds land in a UK account, expect the bank to ask where they came from. A single file with exchange statements, transaction hashes, tax records and any sale documents makes for a far shorter conversation than answering one question at a time.

Want to file it yourself, but not empty-handed?

Not everyone needs full representation. If an exchange or bank is waiting for your answer, the dossier covers the blockchain side, the part that is hardest to put together alone. You add the income documents; the checklist is inside.

  • Full transfer ledger with hashes
  • Sanctions screening across three hops
  • Timing analysis: did funds arrive before or after the counterparty was frozen
  • A letter to compliance in English and a document checklist

The dossier is built on an address on TRON, Ethereum or Solana. If you deposited over another network or by transfer from another exchange, start with the free assessment. The exchange's compliance team makes the decision, and nobody can guarantee an unfreeze.

What Onyx does in your case

  1. Forensic report on your addresses: what exactly triggered the flag, how far your funds really are from the risk cluster, and what the counterparties show.
  2. Source of Funds dossier: a chronological reconstruction of your capital with documents, in the format compliance actually reads.
  3. Communication with the platform's compliance or your bank: one consistent, verified position instead of a pile of scattered tickets.

Frequently asked questions

A payment to an exchange failed. Is my account in trouble?

Often not. A declined payment from your bank is a different event from a hold placed by the exchange. Look at who sent the message: the bank's fraud team and the platform's compliance team need different answers.

Can I complain to the FCA about a frozen exchange account?

You can tell the FCA, but it does not resolve individual disputes, and its full crypto rules have not started yet. Begin with the firm's formal complaint process and keep every reply in writing.

I was scammed and my bank says it can't help. What next?

File with Report Fraud, keep the reference, and trace where the funds went. If they reached an exchange, a police request is the strongest reason for it to act. Anyone asking you for an upfront fee to recover the money is likely a second scam.

Do you give UK legal or tax advice?

No. We supply the on-chain evidence and help you structure the submission. For legal or tax advice, use a UK-qualified solicitor or accountant, who can work from our documents.
